Sara Wright opened the trailer door. She didn't see anyone else in the barn to help her if she needed so she hoped her gelding would be good. Freezie kicked the trailer and screamed. Sara was now very nervous, she didn't think she would be able to handle him, but she had to unload him because the driver would get angry if she took a long time. She walked into the trailer and untied the little gelding. She walked him out, almost being dragged. Freezie circled around her, pushing her around and flinging his head up into the air. He whinned loudly and then did a small rear trying to get out of Sara's hold. He almost took Sara off her feet. "FREEZIE" she yelled, "STOP". She tugged on the rope but the gelding didn't listen. She circled him around her, pretty much being dragged.
Hearing some commotion, Kelly Anderson left her horses stall and ran to the other side of the barn. Just outside she saw Sara having troubles with her pony.
The gelding reared up really high, Sara managed to hold onto the end of the lead rope. As he came down Kelly jumped in and grabbed the lead rope just as Sara let go. "NO!" she yelled in a deep voice. She had with her the dressage whip from her stallion's stall and a lunge line. She quickly clipped on the lunge line to the horse's halter and un-clipped the lead rope. Sara stepped back. The gelding fought Kelly and pulled away with his head held high. "THAT'S ENOUGH" yelled Kelly giving him a good smack on the shoulder with the whip. Freezie jumped away but Kelly gave a sharp tug on the rope and he circled around her. He turned away from her, trying to bolt but Kelly pulled him around and tugged the rope. He pushed forward into her, invading her space. Kelly gave another smack on the shoulder with the whip and then backed him up twenty feet. The gelding stopped so Kelly moved forward and stopped again. The gelding tried to bolt past her so she yanked on the rope and backed him up another twenty feet. "Easy now" she said and the gelding sighed. She placed her hand on his neck and pushed his head down. He touched his nose to the ground in submission. "Good boy" said Kelly and she walked forward with the gelding following her on a loose rope.
"Thanks!" said Sara, "But don't you think that was a little mean?"
"To a horse, a few smacks are nothing. Have you seen what they do to each other in their pastures? He was getting dangerous, he needed to be put in his place"
"Oh, I see what you mean" replied Sara. "I'm looking for a trainer to help me and my horse, do you teach dressage?"
"I am the dressage trainer here. I train horses and riders. I could make a specialized program for the training of you and your horse. He doesn't look safe to ride yet, so for now you would have to use a lesson horse"
"That sounds good! I'm not comfortable riding him yet, he still needs a lot of training"
"I think I'll start full training with him and then talk to Molly about using a lesson horse for you. How does that sound"
"I think that would be good"
"How many lessons a week would you like?"
"I'd like three per week"
"okay, sounds good, I don't have any bookings yet, so what times work best for you? I just don't work on Mondays"
"I'd like Sunday at 2:00, Wednesday at 7:00 and Friday at 8:00"
"Sounds perfect. I'll have a lesson horse assigned for you tomorrow at 7:00 for a rider assessment what level would you say you are roughly?."
"I've competed at 2nd level. How much is the training and lessons"
"The full training will be $900/month for 5 days of training per week or $1000/month for 6 days of training per week and it is $50/private lesson and they are about 30-45 minutes. For a one hour lesson it is $65 and for one and a half hours is $80.
"Sounds good! I'll have Freezie in training 6 days per week and I'll pay you at the office at the beginning of each month?
"That's how I like it! I'll start training with Freezie today. I'd like him to be kept in his stall 24/7 for the first week or two though to keep him listening better, leave him to me!"
They both walked to an open stallion stall together and put Freezie in the stall between Rory and Prince.
"Thanks, Kelly" said Sara, "I'll see you tomorrow for the lesson"
"Bye" said Kelly.
