Kelly walked the gelding out of his stall. Half way through the barn, the gelding acted up. He reared up as high as he could and bolted forward trying to run away. The cavesson easily kept him back once he hit the end of the rope. He started backing up and Kelly said a long, deep "noooooooo". Freezie reared up again and tried to pull the lunge line out of Kelly's hands. Kelly had had enough. She gave a strong, sharp tug on the cavesson which sent a harsh pain to the horse's nose, but the horse was being dangerous. The horse stopped and then moved a step forward; Kelly had won this little argument. Kelly walked up to his head and then kept walking out of the barn. The little horse followed at her side. Once she was outside Freezie thought he was free, he wanted to see all the other horses. He whinnied to the other horses so Kelly yelled "NO" and tugged the rope. Freezie had to focus on her. Oh boy, she though, he's going to be a lot of work. He tried trotting forwards so Kelly backed him up twenty feet, tapping his chest with the whip. She then proceeded to walk to the round pen without a problem. Once in the round pen, she tightened the lunge reins so that Freezie's head was down. Freezie fought the "lunge reins", trying to lift his head. Kelly tapped him with the whip and he bolted forward and trotted extremely fast around the round pen. "Whoaaa" said Kelly. She tugged on the lunge rope and said "WHOA" more loudly. Freezie stopped and started to back up. Kelly pulled on the rope and picked up the lunge whip on the ground. She cracked the whip and Freezie reared way up high fighting the bit and then took off bucking.
"That's enough!" yelled Kelly pulling on the cavesson. The horse jumped forward and kicked out at Kelly. Kelly had had enough, she cracked the whip and sent him galloping around her. About ten minutes later, Freezie was more tired. He accepted the bit and turned his ears towards Kelly. Kelly kept him moving at a fast canter until she asked him to slow to a trot. "Good boooooy" she said. "Whoa". Freezie came to a stop and she walked over to him taking off the lunge reins. He kept his head low, that was exactly what she wanted. He had submitted to her. She stood in the round pen with him for about fifteen minutes. Once he was snorting with calmness, she walked him back to his stall and groomed him really well.
