Sara mounted the bay thoroughbred and gathered her reins.
"I want to see you warm up on your own" said Kelly.
Sara did walk, trot, and canter. She worked on bend and warming up Red. Kelly could see right away that Sara was a good rider. Red was working on the bit and was very balanced.
"Ok, now I want you to do as I say" said Kelly who was sitting in a chair at the near end of he arena.
"OK" replied Sara
"working Trot down the center line, halt at x and salute the judge. Continue at the walk, track right"
Sara started the dressage test and listened for what Kelly would ask next.
"B, canter twenty meter circle, A extended walk, K working trot" Kelly watched as Sara bended him on the circle and watched her transitions and Red's movement. She was heavy on the reins. Red wasn't supple enough. "M X K, extended trot" Kelly wanted to see what kind of trot Sara could get with heavy hands. Sara extended the gelding, but didn't get the flowing trot that Red could accomplish and the gelding leaned forward onto the bit. Sara's hands weren't really that heavy, but Kelly rode with extremely light hands. "P, B, R: shoudler in", S,X,P free walk. The watched the bend and contact in the shoulder in. It was excellent. She wanted to see if Sara could relax more on the free walk. After all, it was the first time she was riding Red. "A, working canter right lead, V, X, R, change of lead at X". She watched her gather her reins again and pick up the canter. Her hands were lighter now but Red was rounding too deep. It would be hard to change leads so she watched. Red had to bring his nose up into the air to change leads, that was a major fault. "C, working trot, H, X, F leg yield" A turn down the center line, stop at X, salute judge. It was a short test but it was all that Kelly needed. Kelly saw that Sara was very good at lateral work.
"Thank you Sara, now let's go untack red" said Kelly and the left the ring.
